José Manuel Durão Barroso served as President of the European Commission for two consecutive terms, from 2004 to 2009 and from 2009 to 2014. Prior to his tenure at the European Commission, he held various positions in the Government of Portugal over a period of twelve years, including the roles of Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the academic sphere, he has held distinguished appointments as a visiting professor at Georgetown University and Princeton University. Currently, he serves as a visiting professor at the Catholic University of Portugal and at the European University Institute’s School of Transnational Governance in Florence.
In addition to his academic engagements, he has held significant leadership roles in the private sector. He was Chairman of the Board of Goldman Sachs International from 2016 and currently serves as Chairman of International Advisors at Goldman Sachs. Furthermore, he is the Chairman of the Board of GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance. Notably, in 2012, he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the European Union, in recognition of its contributions to peace and reconciliation in Europe.
